On Sunday, April 8th 2001 during the "Stop the Bombs" and civil disobedience rally, 4 members of the Koinonia community were arrested for speaking out against the Nuclear Weapons Facility.

The arrests were made in Oakridge Tennessee where 300-400 protesters gathered to try to shut down the Y-12 Nuclear Facility, which is the facility that made the Bomb that took out Hiroshima, and continues to make nuclear weapons in violation with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. For years, OREPA, (Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance) have been holding these Actions of Protest in April and in August. They also hold weekly vigils on Sunday's outside the gates of the Y-12 facilities and Geoffrey has returned to the front gate of the Y-12 facility for a 30 vigil. Read about it here

On Sunday, April 8, 2001, 4 members of the Koinonia community were arrested in this protest. Two of the members, Geoffrey Hennies and Lisa Doscher,  laid down into the street and refused to move. They were arrested and charged with Misdemeanor Obstruction, a State Charge. This charge was dropped on Tuesday. Two other members, Sandy Thornburgh and Michael Phelan face City charges of Criminal Trespass for crossing the line onto the facility's property, and go to court on April 20th. Also in attendance at the action, and the arestees support person  was community member Ellie Castle.

Many at Koinonia are proud that our members stood up for this atrocity that is taking place in Oakridge Tennessee and we are glad that our members had the guts to stand up to the Powers that be to say "STOP THE BOMBS". If more people do this on a regular basis, then maybe the Y-12 facility and others will close their doors.

It's because as a world we have gotten ourselves so far out of harmony, so way off on the material side, that when we discover something like nuclear energy, we are still capable of putting it into a bomb and using it to kill people. -Peace Pilgrim Steps Toward Inner Peace
