Koinonia Community Interns

Orientation & Special Activities Calendar for Summer 2005

At the end of each week, you’ll receive the following week’s detailed calendar, complete with locations, specific hours and other logistics. This is just a road map.

Also… in addition to the events and activities listed here, please remember the following regular Koinonia happenings:

Community-wide
Prayer: Devotions, chapel service, bell ringing
Potlucks: Thursday and Sunday, 6 pm
All-community study sessions: Thursdays at 3:30 pm
Weekly chores
Shuttles to Americus for errands, etc.: Wednesdays at 5 pm & Saturdays at 9:30 am

Specific to community interns

Book group: Tuesdays at 7 pm. Be sure to read the assigned selection before group.
Audio study sessions: Listen to recording Fridays after chapel. Discuss recording Fridays at 1 pm.
Weekly meeting: Wednesdays at 3:30 pm. The first two are facilitated by Rich; the others are self-facilitated unless requested otherwise.
Spiritual companionship: Meet for at least an hour once weekly with your spiritual companion at any convenient time
Housekeeping shifts: times and days to be determined
8:30 pm prayer bell: Community interns ring the bell daily at 8:30 pm.

June

F 6/3: Program begins.

AM: Simple welcoming devotion in chapel, then getting-to-know-you and tour. Prepare devotions and/or involve other community members to participate in the service: Norris, Bud. Facilitate getting-to-know-you exercise (scavenger hunt in pairs for info on trash/recycling; mail/computers/phones; laundry/common closet) and tour—Ellie, Ann

Noon meal: introductions to community members.

PM: nuts and bolts presentation and handouts (liability forms, applications for stipend, driving applications, Koinonia daily schedule, term schedule, food planning, etc.) Introduce and give necessary handouts on Koinonia daily schedule (in folders), term schedule (in folders), liability forms, applications for stipend, driving list applications, etc.—Sandy (will present), Geoffrey (will help to prepare), shared meals group (Sally Ann, Queen E, Kathleen, Sanders)

Sa 6/4: Field trip to Americus. Global Village, grocery run and very basic driving tour (maps in folders)—Tom

7 PM: View Briars in the Cotton Patch with the Dubays and other community members after pizza.

Su 6/5: Invite interns to various church services and to potluck.

M 6/6: AM: work (KCOC youth program, garden, etc.).

PM: Introduction to community life—problem-solving examples, expectations, tools for living in community, communication and conflict resolution, expectations.—Rich, Debbie

7pm: First study group (study groups are normally Tuesday nights at 7pm, but this one is moved to Monday due to community retreat tomorrow). Assign reading of Cotton Patch Evidence up through page 85 for study session on Tuesday June 14.

Tu 6/7: AM: Introduction to spiritual life—spiritual companions introduced to interns, each pair has first session—Spiritual companions

PM: Work: cover bases (store, phones, etc.) during community retreat

W 6/8: AM: Retreat with Don Mosley, founding member of Jubilee Partners.

PM: Discuss local resources (health, etc.). If there’s extra time, take walks through Koinonia Village/Forest Park: Walk through Forest Park—delivering meals on wheels (or at least snacks on wheels?) & introducing people—Gloria (and Quincy?), Geneva (and Hakeem) and/or Walk through Koinonia Village—Thornburghs (including kids), Sally Ann

Th 6/9: AM work.

PM: Introduction to our ministries and afternoon tea with local elders to meet neighbors and hear some history, both personal and organizational.—J, Kathleen, Queen E, Miss Pope, Mildred Burton

F 6/10: AM: Last orientation session—any bases we discover are uncovered, continuation of community living session if it’s unfinished, or if everything’s finished and they haven’t already done so, walk through Forest Park and Koinonia Village (see June 8 for description). If any session runs short, can walk Peace Trail or do Myers-Briggs personality test.

Sa 6/11: Field trip to Albany Civil Rights Museum (with Freedom Singers) and other places if desired. Make sure the places are open, check prices and hours, see about group discounts if there are fees, ensure prices are within our budget, check out vehicle, make reservations when necessary, drive, etc.—Dave Castle, Tom

Su 6/12: Invite interns to church/potluck/other events.

M 6/13: 2-week schedule of rotating through work areas begins. Spiritual companion meetings, work, housekeeping chores, and participation in community activities continue.

Sa 6/18: Dinner with the Castles followed by showing of the Cotton Patch Musical—Ellie& Dave Castle (can ask other community members to help prepare meal and clean up if desired)

F 6/24: Last day of rotating through work areas for 2-week “trial period.”

Sa 6/25 and/or Su 6/26: Field trip to Plains, including historic sites and Sunday school with Jimmy Carter (doors at 8:30am—arrive early). Make sure the places are open, check prices and hours, see about group discounts for fees, ensure prices are within our budget, check out vehicle, make reservations when necessary, drive, etc. Saturday: Geneva (and Hakeem?), Tom. Sunday: Dave Castle.

M 6/27: AM: 3-week assessment, evaluation of orientation program, sharing. Figure out assignments for the rest of the term and assign work mentors. Prepare and conduct evaluations. Purpose of evaluations is to help interns gauge their development and feel out what they might like to change; to find out for us what did and didn’t work during orientation; to give interns feedback from the community. Also, to gather the information needed to pair people with work mentors based on their interests and the needs of the farm—Rebecca, Rich, Jim, Bren

Work mentors—Be available to train, supervise if necessary, answer work-related questions for, be a friend to, and help with scheduling for an intern who is in your area of specialty from 6/28 until end of August—TBA.

PM: Field trip to Smithville Freedom Center. Make sure the places are open, check out vehicle, make reservations when necessary, drive, etc. See if Carrie Thomas can speak with group—also, this date was set arbitrarily, I have no idea if it works for them—call to ask which dates might be good. Nash, Dave Castle.

Tu 6/28: Begin regular work in area of specialty (such as website, store, irrigation, garden, childcare, Heart to Heart/maintenance, tours, lunch prep) plus regular shifts in fruit harvesting/garden, housekeeping, regular meetings with spiritual companions, etc. Continue to plan events such as Americus Pecan Festival, Plains Peanut Festival, speakers from The Open Door, New Hope House, etc.; field trips, Sumter Players shows, plus any that the interns plan themselves.

July

Independence Day Weekend: Off, but invite to church services, potluck, events, etc.

M 7/4: Holiday.

Tu 7/5: Before tonight’s 7pm audio study session, please listen to recording on headphones—the audio quality is too poor to be audible with just a boombox.

Sa 7/9: Field trip to Andersonville Civil War Museum/POW Museum and Yoder’s. Make sure the places are open, get prices and see about group discounts if applicable, ensure prices are within our budget, check out vehicle, make reservations when necessary, drive, etc. Nash, Dave Castle, Tom

M 7/18: 3-week assessment of regular schedule, term in general, evaluation, sharing. Make adjustments as necessary. Prepare and conduct evaluations. Purpose of evaluations is to help interns gauge their development and feel out what they might like to change; to find out for us what did and didn’t work during the two weeks of job rotation; and to give interns feedback from the community.—Rebecca, Rich, Jim, Bren

PM: Prison & Jail Project. Make sure the places are open, check out vehicle, make reservations when necessary, drive, etc. See if John Cole-Vodicka and/or Elizabeth Dede can speak with group—also, this date was set arbitrarily, I have no idea if it works for them—call to ask which dates might be good. W 8/17: No regular work shifts—Summer Fling cleaning

F 8/19: Summer Fling cleaning continues

M 8/22: AM presentation/discussion on end of program, options after Koinonia, cleanliness standards for leaving the Duplex, end of program logistics, the process for joining community long-term, how to live in Koinonia in the greater world, etc.—Bren, Rich, Ann, Gloria

W 8/24: Chapel: Interns perform chapel services this Wednesday.

Th 8/25: AM: Walk-through of housing with housekeeping team to determine anything needing additional cleaning before interns leave. Make sure volunteers leave the Duplex clean, undamaged, and with all the items it is supposed to house—Gloria Wrap-up: evaluations, forwarding addresses, any other paperwork. Prepare and conduct evaluations. Help interns gauge their development and feel out what they might like to change; to find out for us what did and didn’t work during the program in general; and to give interns feedback from the community.—Rebecca, Rich, Jim, Bren

F 8/26: Last day of program.

AM: Finish up all loose ends with work mentors, leave instructions for next interns if this would be helpful. Celebration at lunch. Bake a cake or other treat, prepare worse verses—Geneva, Ellie (to write worse verses before she leaves)

4 pm: Farewell devotion in chapel, hosted by spiritual companions and Bren. Prepare and perform devotions that will lend a sense of closure and send-off, the blessing of the community. Can ask other people to be involved (singing, music, etc.)

Moving out occurs anytime afterwards and continues through the weekend until M 8/29: We ask that volunteers leave their rooms clean and empty, ready for the next term, by this morning so we can prepare for the next group’s arrival.
