Koinonia hosts SCHOOL FOR CONVERSION April 13-15
Theme: Christianity as a Way of Life
Koinonia is thrilled to be partnering with the New Monastic Movement by hosting our first "School for Conversion" (SFC) this spring (April 13-15, 2007). Here is a description of the Schools for Conversion from the New Monasticism website:
"The Holy Spirit seems to be blowing now, as in other eras, to give life to new communities of monastic-type discipleship. We are grateful for the fresh wind and the new way of life God has made possible. It is good news that we want to share. At the same time, we have been overwhelmed in recent months by the interest in this movement from pastors, professors, national magazines, publishers, students, and other seekers. In the midst of all this, we have discerned a call to establish a School for Conversion (SFC).
The purpose of the SFC is to provide theological education and practical formation for the sake of conversion into a new way of life. In a recent Christian Century article, “Seminary 2050” (Feb. 21, 2006), Brian McLaren wrote that “seminary programs should be one part monastery, one part seminar and one part mission agency.” SFC is an experiment in just that kind of education. Based in Christian communities of neo-monastic discipleship, SFC facilitates study directed not toward the production of good papers, but rather toward the creation of new community and ministry opportunities in the abandoned spaces of our world.
Introductory Schools— Existing new monastic communities host three to four day intensive Schools during which participants pray and work with the community, study the biblical and theological foundations of new monastic community, and reflect carefully on the community’s responses to the particular needs of its location and make-up."
